HAYBOX COOKING TIMES

Using a haybox is just like using any other type of cooker. A good cook will learn from experience and adjust their cooking to suit the type of haybox that they are using.

Rice

Wash the rice. Add 1.5 measures of water to a measure of rice. Bring to boil on a fire in a suitable pot with lid on. Bring off the fire and place in the haybox. The rice will be cooked perfectly in an hour but will keep hot for up to 5 hours.

Potatoes

Scrub potatoes. If mashing, then peel otherwise leave skin on. Cut into roughly egg-sized pieces. Cover with water and bring to the boil. Remove from fire and place in the haybox. The potatoes will be cooked in an hour and will keep hot for up to 5 hours.

Dried beans and chickpeas

Soak overnight. Drain and cover with water. Bring to boil in a pan with a lid. Roll boil for 10 minutes. Remove from fire and place in haybox. They will be cooked in around 3 hours.
